This beautiful ornamental tree with its glossy green leaves is well known as a house plant.  However it also performs well outside in the warmer parts of NZ, growing to around 3-4m.  Prefering a shady environment it flowers in the spring with white, jasmine scented flowers.  The red coffee cherries are ripe in summer and are edible, along with the bean of course which can be roasted to make your own home grown coffee!  The plants can be a little delicate, protect them from frost and full sun. Keep moist and feed well. They need warm conditions and good protection from the wind.
